Birmingham has no shortage of adverts for "SIA courses". The wrong booking costs you a week of pay, a failed assessment, or a certificate that employers will not touch. Work through these 8 checks before you pay anyone — including us.
IBA UK is the only authorised IBA accredited training centre in the UK and Northern Ireland, delivering SIA-compliant programmes from Birmingham. This page is a buying guide, not a fake league table of named rivals.
Match the course to the licence you need
Get this wrong and the certificate is worthless for the job you actually want.
Check the job advert for the licence type, then pick the matching course below. Print or screenshot the advert — if a training centre cannot tell you which of their courses maps to it, keep looking.

Confirm it is licence-linked training
IBA UK trains; the SIA licences. That split should be explained up front, not hidden.
After you pass, you must be able to apply to the SIA for that exact licence type. Classroom hours, practical intervention (for door supervisor) and a recognised awarding route matter far more than a stock photo of a radio and earpiece.
Ask every provider
- After I pass, can I apply to the SIA for this exact licence?
- Who is the awarding organisation?
- What happens if I fail a unit — is there a retake route?
Red flag
A "certificate of attendance" with no SIA application step is not the pathway this guide is about. A centre that cannot describe retakes is not ready to take your fee.
See the centre and the address
Licensed training should have a real site you can visit — not just a mobile number and a city name.
Visit if you can. Meet who is instructing and ask who assesses physical intervention. NATO-style logos on a website are not a substitute for a Companies House record and an address you can visit.

Price: compare the package, not the teaser
A course that looks £40 cheaper but excludes first aid is not cheaper.
Ask every provider
- Is Emergency First Aid included for door supervisor?
- Are assessments included, or charged per retake?
- Is the SIA licence fee included — or paid separately to the SIA?
Price the whole week, including lost shifts: the full DS programme is a 7-day Sunday-to-Saturday block with first aid on the Sunday. Neither the CCTV nor CP fee includes the SIA's own application charge.
Duration and format should be plausible
Physical intervention and control-room practice need space, kit and time.
Training at IBA UK is onsite — classroom and practical. Refresher products should be shorter than the full award: the door supervisor refresher is £180, and is not the same course as the £230 full award.
Red flag
Online-only shortcuts are a red flag for licence-linked front-line awards. If a timetable is far shorter than the sector norm with no explanation, ask what has been stripped out.
Instructors and accreditation
You should hear specific answers, not only "fully accredited".
IBA UK's about page sets out SIA-compliant delivery, Highfield centre status, and IBA registration. IBA UK is the only authorised IBA accredited training centre in the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland — if IBA bodyguard or IBA instructor pathways are why you searched, confirm you are booking that centre, not a reseller using similar letters.
Ask every provider
- What operational background do the instructors have?
- How many learners are in a practical group?
- Am I booking the accredited centre, or a reseller?
Booking, refunds and dates
A clear start date, a payment trail, and a person who answers the phone.
IBA UK uses course pages with booking forms and SumUp where prices are live, plus WhatsApp and telephone.
- Get the cancellation rules in writing if your shift pattern might change.
- Sunday starts on door supervisor and Emergency First Aid are a real constraint — first aid is on that day.
- Bring the identity you will later use on the SIA application; a nickname on the booking and a passport in another name creates avoidable friction.
A Birmingham-specific check is travel and start time. IBA UK trains at Praetorian House, Birmingham B44 8NH. A 7-day door supervisor week with a Sunday first-aid start is a different commitment from a 3-day CCTV block. If you cannot attend the Sunday, you cannot complete that DS timetable — ask before you pay.
Also check what “included” means on the quote. IBA UK publishes £230 for full door supervisor with Emergency First Aid, £180 for the door supervisor refresher, £170 for CCTV, and £2,000 for close protection. The SIA licence application fee is never part of those figures; you pay it to the SIA when you apply. If another centre’s headline is much lower, ask whether first aid, assessments, or the SIA fee have been stripped out of the number you are comparing.
If two centres both look legitimate, pick the one that can name the award, show a start date, and answer the phone with a person who knows the timetable. That is a better signal than a star rating copied from another site.
After the course: application support, not licence magic
A good centre trains you; the SIA licences you.
Processing times are the SIA's. IBA UK can point you at the official steps; it cannot stamp a licence. For the full application sequence, use how to get an SIA licence in Birmingham.
Red flag
If someone says they can "get you a badge" without the SIA process, walk away.

Frequently asked questions
What is the most important thing to check?
That the course is the correct SIA licence-linked qualification for the job you want, delivered as real classroom and practical training — not a title that sounds official but does not let you apply to the SIA.
Should I pick the cheapest SIA course in Birmingham?
Compare what is included. IBA UK publishes £230 for full door supervisor with first aid, £170 for CCTV and £2,000 for close protection. A lower headline price that omits first aid or practical intervention can cost more later.
